Litynski USA (ret) is Professor Emeritus of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) at Western Michigan University (WMU) and President Emeritus of the IEEE Education Society. Professor Litynski joined Western in 1999 as Dean of the College of Engineering & Applied Sciences (CEAS), then served as Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, and President (interim) of WMU. In 2004 to 2007, he served three years with the National Science Foundation as a Program Director (Physics) and as acting Division Director for Undergraduate Education. Upon returning to WMU, he served one year as Dean of CEAS and then as Vice President for Research from January 2010 until August 2017. He returned to ECE until retirement in August 2020. Litynski has been active for over 50 years in research and teaching in optics, physics, electrical engineering, computer science, and educational pedagogy. He has authored or co-authored over sixty-five international conference presentations, technical papers, and book chapters in these subjects. Litynski holds a patent with several colleagues. General Litynski served for over 34 years in the Regular Army. His assignments have included Armor, Ordnance, logistics, and R&D positions in the United States, Southeast Asia, and Europe. His service education includes the US Army Command & General Staff College and the National Defense University Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He served at the United States Military Academy at West Point for over two decades in several leadership, teaching, and research capacities in Physics, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science. That included Professor USMA and Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Dr. Litynski earned recognition for his contributions to several organizations. For military service he received the Distinguished Service Medal, three awards of the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, and two Army Commendation Medals. He has been inducted into six Honor Societies and is a member or senior member of eight professional societies. He received awards from the National Science Foundation, American Society for Engineering Education, and Sigma Phi Epsilon National Fraternity. The President of the Republic of Poland awarded him the Cavalier’s Cross of the Order of Merit for his work fostering Polish American relations. Marquis Who’s Who presented BG (ret.) Daniel Mitchell Litynski, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dan and his wife Dianne have three children, eleven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
