A scared pet can bolt even from a kind stranger. Call the owner right away, then keep it in sight from a distance if you can.

The street, the time, and which way it went. A sighting from an hour ago still helps narrow the search.

Snap a photo

Even a blurry one lets the owner confirm it's their pet before driving across the lake.

Check sheds and crawl spaces

Lost cats usually hide close to home. Look under decks, in garages, and anywhere warm and quiet.
